Details of changes to India’s new BIS photovoltaic standard

On March 17, 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) held a meeting to discuss the implementation details of the new photovoltaic product standard, IS 16270:2023, and to solicit public feedback. MCM Partner Laboratories, known for its expertise in battery testing, actively joined the discussion and provided six key inputs covering testing scope, sample quantity, test application, series classification, manual templates, and the sequence for cell and battery certification. These contributions offered the industry clearer guidance for implementation.

Major changes in the new standard:

>Maximum charging current requirement

>Increase long-term capacity requirements

>Increase rated capacity requirements

>Lithium battery cells will be included in the mandatory
