CTIA Battery Compliance Certification Program: Why is It a “Must-Have”?
In the certification system established by the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association (CTIA) for wireless communication products in the United States, battery safety is a crucial part. To this end, CTIA has specifically developed a Battery Compliance Certification Program, aiming to comprehensively assess the safety and reliability of batteries throughout their life cycle through a set of strict standardized testing and inspection, fundamentally preventing the risks of overheating, fire, or explosion caused by battery failures.
Today, this certification has become a mandatory safety passport for products entering the North American communication field, recognized by mainstream operators. If the battery used in a communication product is not registered on the CTIA website, the product will not be adopted by host manufacturers.
Analysis of Certification Standards and Scope
The CTIA Battery Compliance Certification Program adopts the following two core standards based on different battery structures:
Certification Requirements for Battery System Compliance to IEEE 1725: Applicable to single-cell (1S1P) batteries and multi-cell batteries with parallel cells (1SnP).
Certification Requirement for Battery System Compliance to IEEE 1625: Applicable to multi-cell batteries with series cells (nS1P) or series-parallel cells (2SnP).
Latest Developments and Outlook
In September 2025, CTIA officially released Certification Requirements for Battery System Compliance to IEEE 1725 Version 3.2.1, and simultaneously updated the supporting compliance document IEEE 1725 Compliance Certification Requirement Status List and Worksheet (Version 250930). The new version will be mandatorily implemented on March 30, 2026, and both old and new versions can be used simultaneously before that. This version update does not affect previously registered products.
Meanwhile, in a recent CTIA working group meeting, it was discussed to plan to remove the requirement for battery systems to comply with IEEE 1625 from the Battery Compliance Certification Program. This important trend means that the certification path for related products is about to change. We will dynamically share the latest information and assist enterprises in solving all problems in the certification process.
