On August 21, 2025, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) issued the implementation guidelines for the updated standard of IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025/IEC 62040-1: 2017 (Safety Requirements for Uninterruptible Power Supply Systems).
Standard Updates and Implementation Timeline:
Old version standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2014 / IEC 62040-1: 2008
New version standard: IS 16242 (Part 1): 2025 / IEC 62040-1: 2017
Parallel operation deadline: November 19, 2025. After that, the old standard will be officially revoked
Key Points of Standard Updates:
Reference document introduction: IEC 62477-1: 2012
New term definition: Portable UPS
New test clauses: Short-time withstand current, dry heat/wet heat tests
Upgraded test requirements: Creepage distance test, enclosure flame retardancy, etc.
What Does This Mean for Enterprises?
- All existing certified enterprises need to submit test reports and conformity declarations for the new standard before the deadline.
- Enterprises that fail to complete the standard switch before the deadline will face certificate cancellation or model deletion.
- Newly applying enterprises need to explicitly commit to implementing the new standard before the deadline.
Battery Manufacturers Also Need to Pay Attention?
As a key component of UPS, battery performance directly affects the safety of the entire machine. Battery manufacturers need to cooperate with UPS enterprises to ensure that their products meet the relevant test requirements of the new standard.
