Australian regulation requirements for importing toys containing button/coin batteries

Basic Information

Australian government has officially released implementation of 4 compulsory standards to minimize causality risk resulted from button/coin batteries. The compulsory standards with transitional period of 18 months will be enforced from June 22, 2022.

Requirement Analysis

The above 4 standards have prescribed safety and information requirements of button/coin batteries and goods containing button/coin batteries, which include:

1Safety and Requirements:

  • In reasonable and foreseeable or abuse use, button/coin cells should not fall off.
  • Doors or lids of battery case or other firmware to stabilize button/coin batteries should be fixed tightly.
  • Battery case of button/coin batteries should be fixed enough to avoid children from opening.

2Marking Requirements

Packaging should mark safety warnings

Specification should mark below warnings and declaration:

1Warnings in upper case such as DANGER, WARNING or CAUTION;

2Safety warning conformity

3The declaration of batteries out of reach of children

4Provided it is lithium battery, marking should declare that in case battery is swallowed or ingested in any body part, severe or deadly injury will occur in 2 hours or even shorter time

5Provided it is not lithium battery, marking should declare possible injuries resulted from swallowing or ingesting battery in any body part.

6Suggestion of immediate medical care if in suspicion of swallowing or ingesting battery in any body part.

Warm ReminderThe above standards are against the risk of childrens swallowing of button batteries or goods containing button batteries by mistake. Therefore, the toy mostly likely within reach of children is the key controlled goods. Manufacturers producing such goods are suggested to look into the requirements.
